An actor who appeared in two of the most iconic scenes in Gavin and Stacey's emotional final episode has been speaking about what the show was like behind the scenes. Welsh star Scott McGlynn, 37, was one of James Corden's character Smithy's stag night attendees and also appeared as a guest during the high-drama wedding that gripped Britain during Wednesday night's Christmas Day finale.

He explained that, while playing one of Smithy's pals, he acted alongside James, 46, who welcomed all of the actors to the set and thanked them for their performances. Scott said: "I've got to say he was so polite. He came round, shook everyone's hand, introduced himself, thanking everyone for being there and things like that."

The Barry-born actor added: "He was on his phone a whole lot. Honestly, I was with him for the whole four days and he was on his phone a lot, but a lot was going on so maybe that's why, I don't know."

The Gavin and Stacey finale saw all the old stars from Gavin's stag - minus one notable exception - reunited for Smithy's send-off, with the lads embarking on a tour of all their favourite pubs and clubs from when they were younger before realising they were too old for shots and foam parties.

Scott, who posted a picture of him in the Smithy-branded West Ham strips that all the stag lads wore for filming, explained that he shot two days for the wedding and two days for the stag. And while it all looked very boozy on screen, he said the pints the boys were downing were 0% alcohol beer.

He said he also performed Gavin actor Mathew Horne and the other stag lads including Russell Tovey and Larry Lamb, over four days in August and September this year. He said: "It was crazy for the stag do. It so fun to work very closely with James, Mat, all the men really."

The star also explained that the drama was filmed out of sequence, with the wedding scenes filmed before the stag, which took place in "three or four different locations".

He shared the news that he had taken part in a post, writing: "So proud to be part of the incredible Gavin and Stacey Final episode, Working with the very talented James Corden in the scenes, I’ve been keeping this hush hush for months, honour to be part it means a lot to me for so many reasons work and personal."

The Gavin and Stacey finale was one of the highlights of Christmas Day, being branded "absolutely perfect" by fans and winning over some of the most caustic of TV critics.

It secured the highest overnight Christmas Day ratings since 2008 after drawing in an average 12.3 million viewers - even more than watched the 2019 special that concluded with Nessa proposing to Smithy on one knee.

Speaking at a screening of the final episode in London, James explained: "I just wanted it to feel satisfying really. What was really interesting is after the 2019 special, all people would say to us was: 'What does he say?' They would never say: 'Who did he choose?'

"I called Ruth and I was like: 'I wonder if we could trick everybody into thinking that for the first six or seven minutes that they're just going to watch a wedding between Nessa and Smithy.' I remember so vividly having that chat with Ruth going: 'Oh, I wonder if we could pull that off.' I feel like we did."
