Gavin and Stacey fans spot 'true star' of Christmas episode as they all say same thing
Gavin & Stacey fans who adored the last ever episode on Christmas Day are singling out one performance from the show as extra special. While everyone loved the return of all the main characters, including Nessa, Smithy, Gavin, Stacey, Mick, Pam, Bryn and Gwen, many are calling Neil the Baby the star of the show.
Neil is the son of Smithy (James Corden) and Nessa (Ruth Jones), who found out she was pregnant at the end of the first series back in 2007. Neil was born at the end of the second series, and for the third series in 2009 and the return of the show for the 2019 Christmas special, he was played by Oscar Hartland as a baby and then a ten year old. Oscar, who is now 17, returned for the 2024 finale, and one of his most memorable moments on screen featured him singing the Beatles’ classic song Blackbird at his dad Smithy’s wedding to Sonia.
Fans are already clamouring for Oscar to officially release the song, with one writing on Oscar’s Instagram page: “Came here just to comment that the track you performed on the Gavin and Stacey finale you need to release. Fantastic performance,” while a second said: “I fell in love with you and your voice after watching finale. Good luck young man. Your amazing.” A third commented: “Just seen you on Gavin & Stacey had to look you up. Star in the making or what!” while a fourth added: “Please release your cover of Blackbird. I was in floods of tears as soon as you started to sing. Haven’t stopped crying since.”

Oscar is no stranger to singing in front of the cameras, as he competed in The Voice Kids in 2023. When he appeared on the show he said: "People know me for being Neil the Baby in Gavin & Stacey, which I absolutely love, but now I wanna be known for my music and singing."
The Voice Kids also included a VT from Ruth Jones wishing him luck, in character as Neil’s mum Nessa. She said: "We knows what’s occurring, you’re on The Voice Kids. Don’t forget you takes after your mother when it comes to music. Go out there and you smash it kid alright? Crackin’."
Oscar has since posted a photo of his prized script from the finale episode of Gavin & Stacey on Instagram, and also shared a couple of behind the scenes clips – including one where he is sitting with the actors who play Gavin and Stacey’s children with them all looking dejected as actor Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason, walks past. “When you never found out what happened on the fishing trip…” he wrote, in reference to the running joke about Bryn and Jason’s secret from their fishing trip that has never been revealed.
