The Regime episode 1 cast: Who stars in Kate Winslet's new series?

Kate Winslet is back on our screens for Sky's latest political drama The Regime - a satirical series about a European dictator ruling over a fictional European country.

The Titanic star last appeared on TV for the BAFTA-winning series I Am Ruth, playing a middle-aged mother concerned for her social media-obsessed daughter. However, the Oscar winner now plays Elena Vernham, the chancellor leading an authoritarian regime and struggling to maintain power, in Sky Atlantic's six-part series.

With all six episodes now available to stream on Sky and NOW, Sky subscribers can now watch the whole boxset for free. Elena Vernham - Kate Winslet

Kate Winslet stars as Elena Vernham - the chancellor of an authoritarian European regime - in Sky's newest drama The Regime. Set over the course of a year, The Regime follows Elena as she tries to run the country as her premiereship begins to unravel.

Behind her brave façade, Elena appears to struggle with hypochondria, becoming convinced that there's mould within the walls of her palace that could kill her and hiring a soldier to track the moisture in the air.

Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet is best known for starring as Rose in 1997 epic Titanic, however she won her first Academy Award for her performance in 2009 film The Reader. She has also starred in Sense and Sensibility, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Steve Job, Little Children and Revolutionary Road.

As for TV, Kate played the title role in 2011's Mildred Pierce and took part in Running Wild with Bear Grylls before taking a six-year break from on-screen roles. She went onto star in Mare of Easttown and I Am Ruth, alongside her daughter Mia Threapleton, 23 - who she shares with first husband Jim Threapleton.

Kate was married to film director Jim from 1998 until 2001, before her eight-year marriage to director Sam Mendes - with whom she shares son Joe, 20 - which ended in 2011. Kate is now married to Ned Rocknroll - Richard Branson's nephew - and the pair share son Bear, 10.

Belgian actor Matthias Schoenaerts stars in The Regime as Herbert Zubak - a disgraced soldier hired by Elena to track the level of moisture in the air around her. He soon becomes Elena's right-hand man and forms a close relationship with the authoritarian leader.

The actor, 46, made his acting debut in Oscar-nominated Belgian film Daens, but shot to international fame in 2012's Rust and Bone, 2014's The Drop and 2015's Far from the Madding Crowd, in which he played Gabriel Oak opposite Carey Mulligan's Bathsheba.

He recently starred in Netflix's The Old Guard, crime drama Brothers by Blood and 2022 Margot Robbie film Amsterdam.

French star Guillaume Gallienne plays the role of Nicholas Vernham - Elena's husband - in Sky's drama The Regime. The couple's relationship is a frosty one - which isn't helped when Elena begins to grow close to her new hire Herbert.

Guillaume, 52, has starred in mainly French projects such as his 2013 autobiographical comedy Me, Myself and Mum. However, he has taken on roles in 1995's Sabrina with Harrison Ford, 2006's Marie-Antoinette and more recently, Wes Anderson's film The French Dispatch. He is also the voice of Paddington in the French version of the 2014 film.

In Sky's The Regime, Andrea Riseborough takes on the role of Agnes - the manager of the Chancellor's palace. She has a young son Oskar, who Elena treats like her own son.

Andrea, 42, has starred in numerous British projects, from 2014 film Birdman to BBC One's The Witness for the Prosecution. She was nominated for a BAFTA after playing Margaret Thatcher in 2008's The Long Walk to Finchley and recently starred in Channel 4's Alice and Jack as well as Netflix's Matilda the Musical.

American actress Martha Plimpton plays the role of US Senator Judith Holt, who visits Chancellor Elena to broker a deal for her country.

Martha, 53, began her acting career at the age of 11 in 1981's Rollover before appearing in The Goonies, The Mosquito Coast, Parenthood and Samantha. She is best known for starring as Virginia Chance in sitcom Raising Hope and as Patti Nyholm in The Good Wife.

Martha recently voiced Yelena in Frozen II and took on roles in 2021's Mass, Sky's A Town Called Malice, The Blacklist and upcoming thriller Prime Target, which stars One Day's Leo Woodall.

Edward Kepplinger - Hugh Grant

Love Actually's Hugh Grant is back on the small screen in The Regime as Edward Kepplinger - the Leader of the Opposition who Elena ousted from power.

Hugh, 63, previously starred in Sense and Sensibility alongside Kate Winslet but is best known for his roles in romcoms Notting Hill, Love Actually, Bridget Jones's Diary, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Two Weeks Notice.

He recently starred in Wonka with Timothee Chalamet, 2019's The Gentlemen, Paddington 2, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and made a cameo in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.
