Could Prince William walk Meghan Markle down the aisle?
Could Prince William walk Meghan Markle down the aisle at the royal wedding?
With around two months until the former Suits actress weds Prince Harry, speculation has turned to who might give Meghan away.
While Harry’s brother, Prince William is expected to be best man (despite previously joking that Harry is yet to ask him), the big day might see him take a further role in the wedding proceedings – walking the bride down the aisle.
The couple are set to tie the knot on May 19th at St Georges Chapel in the grounds of Windsor Castle.
But while the official guestlist remains a closely guarded secret, it has been reported that two of Meghan’s closest male relatives might not make the big day, which could lead to Prince William stepping up.
There are suggestions that Meghan’s half-brother Thomas Markle Jr has not actually received an invite to the wedding
A source close to Meghan reportedly told The Daily Star: “Tom did not receive an invite.”
“I think it is because he just can’t seem to keep his mouth shut.”
“If he would quit talking to the media, Meghan would probably be more into the idea of inviting him.”
There are also suggestions that Meghan’s father might not give her away as it is reported that he has struggled to cope with being thrown into the public eye following her romance with Prince Harry.
Initially however, speaking after the couple’s engagement, Thomas Markle, a TV engineer who lives in Mexico revealed that he would “love” to walk his daughter down the aisle.
And Meghan Markle’s half-sister Samantha Markle, 53, also told US Weekly that she believed Meghan’s father would want to walk her down the aisle: “I’m sure he wants to walk her down the aisle. I know he wants to do it.”
“He’s a shy guy now, he’s a quiet man, but he’ll speak when he feels it’s appropriate. He gave me permission to say how happy he is, but he’ll talk when he’s ready,” she added.
Maybe Meghan’s dad has had a change of heart or perhaps his daughter is just worried about how he’ll cope about being thrown into the spotlight that the role will no doubt bring.
“She’s also worried about how he would handle it as he’s become even more of a recluse,” a source told the Daily Star.
There are also rumours of some family upset following comments from Prince Harry that Meghan was getting the family she’s never had.
Last year, Meghan Markle’s half-sister Samantha Grant hit back at Prince Harry after he described the Royal Family as “the family I suppose [Meghan’s] never had.”
In a series of tweets, Samantha criticised the royal’s comments on BBC Radio 4‘s ‘Today’ programme, saying that Meghan’s big family have “always” supported her.
It is understood that while Meghan is very fond of her soon-to-be brother-in-law, her first choice for giving her away would be her mum, Doria Ragland.
But having a woman walking down the aisle would mean breaking with royal tradition.
“The royals understand why Meghan might prefer to have her mother, but it’s not exactly traditional to have a woman walk a bride down the aisle,” the source continued.
“Some of the royals aren’t happy about the idea, so they suggested that William do it. He is the natural choice.”
Though it would be unconventional to have Prince William walk his sister-in-law down the aisle, when have Harry and Meghan ever played by the royal rules?
While we might have to wait until the big day to find out who officially gets the role, Meghan has been busy preparing for the wedding in other ways.
Last week, it was reported that Meghan been baptised by the Archbishop of Canterbury in a secret ceremony with her fiancé Prince Harry at her side.
News of the baptism follows reports that Meghan also celebrated her hen do last weekend.
It is thought the 36-year-old former Suits star spent the day getting pampered with her closest friends at a secret spa location.
Today she is making her first appearance with her soon-to-be grandmother-in-law the Queen at a ceremony to mark Commonwealth Day.
