Meghan Markle’s dad has revealed he would “love” to walk his daughter down the aisle when she marries Prince Harry next year.

Thomas Markle, a TV engineer who lives in Mexico, broke his silence on the royal engagement to say that he was “very pleased” and “delighted” about the news, but stressed he couldn’t say more as “you know I can’t talk.”

He told the Mirror, who presented him with a gift of Champagne and Twinings English tea to toast the happy couple, that he would “love to” give Meghan away at the wedding next year.

The news comes as Meghan Markle’s half-sister Samantha Markle, 53, told US Weekly that she believed Meghan’s father would want to walk her down the aisle: “I’m sure he wants to walk her down the aisle. I know he wants to do it.”

“He’s a shy guy now, he’s a quiet man, but he’ll speak when he feels it’s appropriate. He gave me permission to say how happy he is, but he’ll talk when he’s ready,” she added.

Though Harry is yet to meet his fiancee’s father, he is said to be considering flying to Mexico to be introduced. But according to the Daily Mail the prince did call him to ask for his permission to propose before they got engaged earlier this month.

If Thomas Markle is planning to play a role in the royal wedding, he can now book his flights as the couple have now announced details of their wedding date and venue.

The royal wedding will take place in May 2018 at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

The couple have chosen a date after the Duchess of Cambridge‘s due date in April, so the new royal baby could make an appearance as a guest.

The Archbishop of Canterbury gave a hint as to the church location after saying that Harry and Meghan “had chosen to make their vows to God.”

But now that we know when and where the wedding will take place, speculation is now turning to what will Meghan wear? While many have pointed to her friend (and matchmaker), designer Misha Nonoo, the Bahrain-born creative doesn’t have any experience with bridal wear.

Other names in the running include Erdem, Elie Saab, Carolina Herrera and Harry’s friend, Victoria Beckham. Although royals are expected to choose a British designer, it’s a possibility that Meghan may decide to honour her American heritage with a US name instead.

People have also been wondering what the couple’s title will be after the marriage. Though Meghan and Harry’s title will not officially be revealed until their wedding day, royal experts believe that the couple will be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Wedding guests are likely to include political figures including Harry’s friends Barack and Michelle Obama as well as more celebrity names such as Serena Williams, Priyanka Chopra and David and Victoria Beckham.

The royal couple announced their engagement at the end of November with a photo call in the Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace.

There, Meghan showed off her three-stone diamond engagement ring featuring a stone from one of the couple’s favourite locations, Botswana, and two from Princess Diana’s personal jewellery collection.

In their first interview together, the couple spoke about how they met, revealing that Harry proposed over roast chicken in the confines of the royal’s two-bedroom Nottingham Cottage.

They also packed on the PDAs throughout their engagement photocall, giving an indication to everyone that the couple don’t plan to play by the royal rulebook.
