Naming your baby is one of the many tough jobs parents need to do while bringing a new life into the world. Some people are very prepared and have already picked out a moniker before the baby is born, whereas others say they need to see the child before they make a decision.

The name a child is given is how they will be known for the rest of their life, so the decision needs to be made wisely. No matter what you choose, the name you give to a baby will likely end up receiving some judgement one way or another.

While many parents come up with names that are beautiful and will stand the test of time, some parents aren't so successful, with their kids growing up embarrassed by the title they are given.

This may be the case for one child after a neo-natal nurse shared the worst name she'd ever heard during her career. The lactation consultant, who provides assistance to breastfeeding mothers, was asked the question by a new mum and her answer shocked the ward, reports the Mirror.

The mum, who had recently given birth to her son, was so appalled by the response that she turned to social media to discuss it. On Reddit, she wrote: "Just delivered my baby boy, Calvin, today. Got curious and asked the boob lady on my floor what was the worst name she ever saw on the job.

"She said hands down it was the little girl named Burden. F***ing Burden. I couldn’t believe my ears. That’s some Puritan 1700s s***."

The word burden normally means heavy load, and many people know it for its negative use. However, a parenting website called Prokerala, says that Burden is typically used for a boy and means "one who lives at the castle".

Despite this, many Reddit users thought along the same lines as the new mum, with one writing: “Burden is ROUGH. Imagine the poor kid in school. ‘Your mum named you that bc [because] you are one.’” The mum replied: “Absolutely diabolical”.

Another Redditor said: "Burden is straight up awful! No good options for potentially mishearing either because Borden is just as bad!! Poor kid."

To which, the mum added: "I was wracking my brain trying to think of a similar name or type of name they might have been going for but just didn't realise how bad Burden was but [I don’t know], I think they were just evil."

Another person suggested that the little girl could go by the nickname 'Birdie' if she decides she doesn't like the name. According to Nameberry, this nickname is of English and Swedish origin meaning 'bird'.

Back to the Burden name critics, another Reddit user said: "How is that not considered abuse, seriously. The poor child will understand what her name means eventually." While another added: "I wonder if they didn't know what it meant? You'd think you'd look it up though before inflicting that on a child."
