Fashion brand Moschino is selling a £892 handbag that looks like a baguette
Last month, it was revealed that comfy clothes are – unsurprisingly – the single biggest fashion trend of 2020.
But, as proven by a recent spike in searches for Christmas party-appropriate sequinned face masks, we’re also been partial to a mood-boosting jazzy accessory or two this year.
At least that’s what Moschino seems to be banking on with the launch of its range of handbags inspired by food items.
Among the unusual creations from the Italian designer brand are a clutch that looks like a baguette and another resembling a croissant on a chain – yours for $1,200, or approximately £892, each.
The tell-tale sign the printed leather accessories aren’t edible is a gold-plated Moschino label branded onto the outside.
Fashion fans on social media have been let rather bemused by the pricey offerings from famously humorous creative director Jeremy Scott – but it was the baguette piece that particularly got people talking.
In a post on Twitter, one person wrote: “To look like you’re holding a Subway.”
Another shared: “That’s a lot [of] dough for one baguette.”
A third commented: “I’m set to go Asda and buy my Mrs a baguette and slap a Moschino tag on it.”
And a fourth demonstrated how she had fashioned her own bag out of a real-life piece of the long French bread.
@Moschino You may be the upper crust when it comes to fashion & as much as we knead & loaf you, I kneaded to wheat in when we saw our BAGuette design has been recrumbated/pinched. We are in disbeyest by what we saw today. Ours cost £1.20 to bake, please don't baguette about this. pic.twitter.com/I0YFso5c7u

It comes as fellow Italian fashion brand Gucci also broke boundaries earlier this year with a tartan dress for men to fight “toxic stereotypes”.
The luxury retailer unveiled an orange tartan dress costing £1,700 that featured a satin bow, and it’s currently still available on the brand’s website.
Describing the item – listed as ‘Tartan cotton long smock shirt’ – Gucci reveal that 1990s grunge and Peter Pan were its inspirations.
They wrote: “Inspired by grunge looks from the ‘90s and styled over ripped denim pants, this tartan smock in delicate colours reflects the idea of fluidity explored for the Fall Winter 2020 fashion show, disrupting the toxic stereotypes that mould masculine gender identity.

“The contrast Peter Pan collar and smock embroidery on the front add a childhood inspired element, which ties to a recurrent theme of the collection.
“Pieces with versatile ways to wear and style embrace each person who is part of the House’s individual spirit.”
As shown by the male model on the site, the dress – made from 100% cotton – can be styled in the chillier months with jeans.
It came just weeks after Gucci also caused much bemusement with a pair of grass-stained dungarees, costing £1,088.
