Bridgerton, Derry Girls and Doctor Who star Nicola Coughlan has opened up about filming in Cardiff and raved about one street in particular that all Welsh people will know and love. Nicola Coughlan appeared on BBC One’s The Graham Norton Show alongside Daniel Craig, Jesse Eisenberg, Kieran Culkin and girl group FLO.

The actress, who made her name in Northern Irish sitcom Derry Girls when it first appeared on our screens in 2018, has since gone on to become a household name for UK audiences, starring in Netflix’s Bridgerton and BBC’s Dodger. For the latest TV & Showbiz news, sign up to our newsletter.

She is also due to appear in a new movie called Love and War and this year’s Christmas special of Doctor Who which will be aired on Christmas Day. She plays the character of ‘Joy’, and when Graham Norton asked Coughlan if the character will return for future episodes, she said: “I had a lovely time in Cardiff (where Doctor Who is predominantly filmed) so I don’t know, I don’t know how it works, but if they want me back, maybe.”

She then added that when she was in Cardiff she intended to eat well during her stay but failed due to an iconic street being within close proximity. She said: “When I was there, I was like ‘I’ll eat really healthy while I’m here’, and then there’s Chippy Alley in Cardiff....”

At this point Craig, Eisenberg and Culkin look somewhat perplexed before Coughlan explained: “It’s a famous lane of chip shops - they do curry and chips there. I really took in the culture!” Norton then quipped: “It’s so Welsh!”

The ‘Chippy Alley’ Coughlan refers to is of course Caroline Street in the centre of Cardiff - more commonly known as ‘Chip Alley’ or ‘Chippy Lane’’ - which is famous for its string of fish and chip shops, as well as kebab and pizza takeaways.
