If you liked Bodyguard, you'll love this BBC drama BBC

You may have missed it the first time around, but now that BBC's underrated drama Capture is on Netflix, it should go straight to the top of your watch list. It first aired back in 2019 on BBC One to brilliant reviews and it stars a fantastic line-up of familiar faces: Charlie Murphy from Happy Valley, Paapa Essiedu from Gangs of London, Holliday Grainger from Strike, Callum Turner of Masters of the Air, Indira Varma (you might know her from Doctor Who), and Laura Haddock from The Recruit.

Together, they bring to life an intense story that blends action, suspense, and some seriously mind-bending twists – what's not to love. At the heart of the story is Lance Corporal Shaun Emery (played by Callum Turner), a former soldier who was exonerated after a war crime conviction. But just when it seems like his life might settle, he gets caught up in a new set of accusations, with CCTV footage seemingly backing up the charges.

From the start, it's a tense ride reminiscent of the nation's favourite Bodyguard—another high-stakes thriller from Jed Mercurio that captured viewers the year before. Don't just take our word for it, Capture also has a near-perfect score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, no surprises then that it was quickly renewed by the BBC for a second season, which ran in August 2022.

As for a third season? There’s been some buzz about it, but nothing official has been confirmed yet. In a July 2023 interview, the show's creator, Ben Chanan, couldn’t confirm or deny a possible return for The Capture. Then, in November 2023, Paapa Essiedu was asked about it and seemed just as in the dark, though he’s clearly proud of his work on the series. “Ben Chanan, who writes the series, I know it’s a story that’s really close to his heart,” he said. “But I don’t remember much about the future of it. I loved working with him, and I thought the scripts were amazing.”

He also reflected on his character’s journey, hinting that there might be more to explore: “I thought that character was so interesting, and he ends up in a pretty wild place by the end of the series. So who knows what the future holds?” Perhaps renewed interest in the show from its Netflix release will prompt a renewal of the series for a third instalment - we're hoping so.

The Capture is now available to watch on Netflix.
