The world’s first swallowable gastric weight-loss balloon has landed in the UK and promises to shed the pounds without the need for surgery.

The Elipse Balloon can be fitted in just 20 minutes, as the patient swallows a capsule which later inflates with water to 550ml in the stomach.

This expansion gives the illusion of feeling full and can reportedly help patients lose up to 15 percent of their total body weight in just four months.

After use, the balloon naturally deflates and passes through the system.

Dr. Shaw Somers, a bariatric surgeon at Streamline Surgical, is an advocate for the weight-loss device and said: “Innovative weight loss treatments like the Elipse Balloon could be part of the next generation solution, to help fight against obesity in those patients who are looking for a quick, effective and non-surgical intervention.”

He continued, “By bridging the gap between surgery, diet and exercise, the Elipse Programme assists patients in modifying their eating habits and lifestyle, for long-term weight loss goals.”

Over 4,000 patients have been fitted with the Elipse Balloon so far and report losing an average of two stone thanks to the nifty device.
