Wendy’s will be opening its first UK outlet early next year.

The American company is the world’s third largest burger chain after McDonald’s and Burger King.

But, living here in Blighty, you’ll likely have only heard of Wendy’s in US sitcoms.

You might also have been lucky enough to enjoy it abroad, as the chain has outlets in 30 countries worldwide including the Americas, Asia and the Middle East.

And now it’s coming to the UK.

According to documents seen by the Mail on Sunday, Wendy’s is planning to open 20 outlets in Britain in the next 12 to 18 months as part of the brand’s European roll-out.

The UK will be the “beachhead” of this expansion, amid reports that the UK fast food market is growing by almost 3% a year.

“Where the UK has been pulling back is in casual dining – just like we have in the US,” Abigail Pringle, The Wendy’s Company chief development officer told the publication.

“But we believe their overall growth in the quick service restaurant segment – and hamburger specifically – is growing and we believe we can be a challenger brand in that market and have great success.

She added: “The United Kingdom will be our beachhead to European expansion. We believe it is a growing market and it has lots of great growth ahead of it.”
