Outlander star reveals moment she 'choked up' over show ending - and hopes fans 'aren't too upset' by finale

Jamie and Claire Fraser first graced fans' screens a decade ago, captivating audiences with their heart-wrenching love story on the show Outlander.

But fans were left devastated after finding out that the next season of Outlander will be the last, with the popular show set in the Scottish Highlands coming to an end.

The cast and crew are currently filming the eighth and final season of the period drama, with Claire Fraser actress Caitriona Balfe admitting the cast struggled to contain their emotions as they read the final script.

Speaking to VIP Magazine on the IFTA red carpet, Caitriona said: "It’s a strange thing to be at the end, but still have five months to go with filming

"We had our first read through about a month ago. We all got a bit choked up because we’ve been together for over ten years and for better or worse, we’re totally a family. We’ve all grown up together on that show. We’ll be so sad to say goodbye to it."

Fans have been eager to find out how the show will end, however Caitriona admits that even the cast has been kept in the dark about what will happen in the final scenes.

"What we do know though is that you can never please everybody but we all just hope that they [the writers] make what they believe is the best version and we have to hope people aren’t too upset," she said.

It comes as Outlander’s Sam Heughan spoke out about the upcoming spin-off series Blood of my Blood that is currently filming in Scotland alongside the final season of Outlander.

It’s a prequel of sorts thanks to the original series’ time-travelling timelines that will delve into the early lives of Jamie’s parents in the 18th century, and also focus on Claire Fraser’s parents in England during World War I.

Speaking on a panel at Outlander convention Land Con 6 in Paris, Scottish actor Heughan, who has played the role of dashing highlander Jamie Fraser in the hit fantasy series since 2014, gave his opinion on the new show. “If you love Outlander, you’re going to love Blood of my Blood,” he told the audience.

“I’m really excited about this show. There is so much to look forward to. This show, I can’t give anything away, but I’m going to be the biggest fan. I’ve been hearing stories about the actors, about the characters, and the storyline… I can’t wait to see it.”
