A marathon runner who competed in the Paris Olympics this summer has died after allegedly being set on fire by an ex-boyfriend. Running star Rebecca Cheptegei, 33, died in hospital days after the attack. The long distance runner, who came 44th in the women’s marathon at the Paris Olympics had been in critical condition since Sunday, after suffering severe burns to over 80% of her body.

Just weeks after competing at the Olympics, the athlete was reportedly assaulted at their home in Endebess, Kenya. According to police reports, the incident occurred during a domestic dispute, where the boyfriend horrifically poured petrol over Cheptegei before setting her alight.

Rebecca had returned home from church with her children when she was attacked by her partner. It’s claimed that the couple had argued about the land their home was built on. Local police chief, Jeremiah ole Kosiom, said: “The couple were heard quarrelling outside their house… During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her.”

Rebecca’s daughter, who witnessed the attack, tried to save her mother by running to her and desperately seeking help from their neighbours. She said to Kenyan newspaper The Standard: "He kicked me while I tried to run to the rescue of my mother… I immediately cried out for help, attracting a neighbour who tried to extinguish the flames with water but it was not possible."

Rebecca was going to be moved to another hospital in Nairobi for specialist treatment, but her condition got worse, with the hospital confirming she passed away on Wednesday evening. Director of the Kenyan hospital Dr Owen Menach, said: “Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night.”

As a federation, we condemn such acts and call for justice. May her soul rest In Peace.”

Donald Rukare, chairman of The Uganda Olympic Committee, said: “May her gentle soul rest in peace and we strongly condemn violence against women. This was a cowardly and senseless act that has led to the loss of a great athlete. Her legacy will continue to endure.”
