Normal People stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal have hinted at a potential second season of the show in a new Instagram post.

The pair both rose to fame on the 2020 BBC series, which is based on the novel by Sally Rooney and follows the relationship between Marianne and Connell as they weave in and out of each others' lives over a number of years.

While the show wrapped up the story told in the original book, speculation over a follow-up season has remained in the years since.

Now the two stars have teased the possibility of something happening in a new post shared on Daisy's Instagram stories.

Writing over a selfie of her and Paul, the actress wrote: "We've got some news to share!! Watch this space," with the star also holding up two fingers.

Speaking back in 2021, Paul – who played Connell on the show – told Digital Spy and other press that he "would love to do" a follow-up season.

"I would work with Daisy again in a heartbeat and regardless of working with her again, I'm just really excited to see her so we can see each other again," he said. "It would be great.

"At the moment, there's nothing at all in the pipeline so I don't want to be quoted on 'maybe there's going to be a [Normal People] season 2'. There's nothing at the moment."

Director Lenny Abrahamson also revealed in 2020 that they had "talked about the possibility of how interesting it would be to check back in with them."

"But apart from just general musings and over a drink, no, there have been no concrete discussions about what it would be like," he added to Deadline. "As Sally says, the book stops where it stops because it feels right.

"But, I have a sneaking thing in the back of my head that if everybody was willing, and if the stars aligned, I'd love to revisit them in five years and find out what happened, where they are."

He further teased: "Is somebody a father or a mother? What relationships are they in that then get disrupted by their meeting again? But it would be really strange to pick that up eight weeks later with him travelling to New York, I think. There needs to be time. You'd do it for real, you'd do it à la Before Sunset."

Normal People is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
