Mum-of-three, 26, dies after 'barbaric' BBL surgery in Turkey
A mum-of-three tragically died following “barbaric” Brazilian butt lift (BBL) surgery in Turkey, an inquest has heard. Demi Agoglia, 26, had been told by her family that she didn't need to undergo surgery, but she was determined to have it in January.
Demi travelled to Istanbul for the procedure on 4 January alongside her partner. Sadly, just three days after having the operation, she died in hospital in Istanbul. At Bolton Coroner’s Court, an inquest heard how Demi had been self-conscious about the way she looked and that her mother had told her she was a “good looking girl” who didn’t need the operation.
Demi’s partner Bradley also stated how he didn’t want her to have the surgery, though she booked the trip after it was advertised by “some celebrity”. However, after having the operation, Demi was left “shaking” and seemed to be “very, very cold”, her partner said. The following day, she tragically collapsed at a villa and was taken to hospital where she died.

Speaking at the inquest, Dr Omar Tillo, a Harley Street consultant plastic surgeon, said: “The lack of proper care and response, particularly the failure to address post-operative complications, are likely to have played a significant role in Demi's tragic outcome.”
Meanwhile, pathologist Dr Usha Chandran explained: “I'm really disturbed by Demi's death and I feel all these cosmetic procedures are given a lot of importance by celebrities... and are being done in shoddy clinics.”
The coroner, John Pollard, concluded that the medical cause of death was a microscopic fat embolism - where tissue leaks into the bloodstream. “Most inquests are sad by their very nature. This inquest is especially so as it involved the death of a young woman with considerable mental health issues who, despite the fact she was pretty and her partner did not think she needed any improvement, insisted on having a BBL surgery,” he said, according to the Daily Star.
“I found she went to Turkey presumably because the process was quicker and cheaper than the UK. We know little or nothing of the perioperative situation because the Turkish authorities refused to co-operate with the coronial process.
“I do find the post-operative care varied from woeful to completely non-existent. When she showed obvious symptoms of serious illness it was not immediately recognised by her partner, understandably, or the unqualified members of staff.
“By the time she got to the hospital it was frankly too late and she was in an irrecoverable state. I think it was indicative of the poor level of care that at all times she was transported not in an ambulance but in a taxi, it was always the same taxi.
“I heard extremely helpful evidence from Dr Tillo who clearly spelt out all the failures and failings he was able to assess from the evidence and the sparse documentation available to him.”
The coroner then concluded that Demi died as a result of “misadventure contributed to by neglect” and told her family how he’d write to Health Secretary Wes Streeting about the topic. “I do feel something further needs to be done to stop this frankly barbaric medical practice being conducted to such low standards that would certainly not be tolerated in the UK,” he said.
