Man Asks Girlfriend's Father for Blessing to Marry Her — but the Conversation Does Not Go as Planned
A Redditor shares his cringe-worthy experience of accidentally proposing to his girlfriend's father instead of asking for his blessing
A man took to Reddit to tell the humorous story of when he accidentally proposed to his girlfriend’s father — instead of asking for his blessing. In his post, he shares the awkward moment that unfolded during a dinner at his girlfriend’s family home.
“My girlfriend and I have been together for two years, and everything has been wonderful,” the man writes. Following tradition, he thought it would be respectful to ask her father for his blessing before popping the question.

After dessert, he nervously pulled her father aside. “I was feeling anxious, and my mind seemed to go blank,” he explains. Rather than the proposal request going the way he pictured in his mind, the man stumbled over his words.
“I meant to say, ‘I’d like your blessing to marry your daughter,’ ” the man recounts. “Instead, what came out of my mouth was, ‘I’d like to marry you.’ ” His slip of the tongue sent the poster into an immediate panic as he realized what he'd just asked of his future father-in-law.
“I stammered something like, ‘I mean, I want to marry your daughter! Not you! Unless you’re into that! Not that I mean you’re not attractive or—oh my god, I’ll just go jump off a cliff now,' ” he recalls.

Ironically, his girlfriend overheard part of the conversation and burst into laughter, the man writes. Her father jokingly responded, saying “Well, I appreciate the offer, but I think my wife would object.”
Despite the Redditor’s initial embarrassment, the story took a lovely turn when his girlfriend’s father ultimately granted his blessing for the marriage. The interaction has since become a family joke, with her entire family referring to him as “Dad’s other husband.”
Reddit users shared their amusement, warning the poster to beware that the story will be told for years to come. “Brace yourself, this story is gonna come out in an engagement party speech, a wedding speech, every anniversary, every baby shower, gender reveal (if you do them) and child's birthday,” one user writes. “Your kids are gonna be able to recite this story word-for-word in the exact same tone and with the same gestures.”
“You gave that man the best gift he could ever be given as a dad. An opportunity to have a joke that can be run into the ground for decades to come without it ever getting old,” writes another.
