Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s relationship and marriage played out in the public sphere, from social media posts to the famous family’s reality TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and it seems their divorce is being played out publicly too.

The Yeezy founder played an instrumental role in overhauling his former wife’s wardrobe, famously demanding that she purge her entire closet of clothes just months into their relationship.

The musician quickly became her stylist and hand-selected nearly every outfit she wore in public until their split in February 2021 after six years of marriage, but it seems he isn’t the biggest fan of the Kardashian’s post-divorce style.

In the most recent episode of the famous family’s new Hulu series, The Kardashians, the SKIMS founder told her older sister Kourtney that she had reached a point in her marriage to Kanye West where she would ask him his opinion on her outfits regularly, adding that she would often have anxiety if he didn’t approve.

“I got to a point where I would ask his advice for everything down to what I wear,” Kim revealed on Wednesday’s episode. “Even now I’m having panic attacks, like what do I wear?”

Kim also revealed to the eldest Kardashian sibling that she was nervous about charting new fashion territory without West.

“I’m trying to figure out, like, who am I in the fashion world? Who am I by myself?” she explained. “I was always, like, The Kardashians with my sisters and then I was, like, Kimye. Like, who is Kim K? That is the jump. How do I get there without Kanye?”

That jump came when Kim was left to her own devices for the WSJ. Magazine’s Innovator Awards in November 2021, where she was being honoured for her shapewear brand SKIMS, but it seems that her ex-husband wasn’t a massive fan of the outfit.

Kim chose for a monochrome brown look from her own shapewear brand’s collaboration with Fendi, opting for a brown leather dress with matching gloves, and accessorising with a pair of Tom Ford for Gucci vintage over-the-knee lizard boots from the autumn/winter 1999 collection.

All in all, not a huge departure from the looks West had been styling for the Kardashian; still figure-hugging and mainly monochrome. But West didn’t approve of his ex-wife’s first self-styled look, and didn’t hold back in telling her so.

“He called me afterwards,” Kim told her sister. “He told me my career is over and then he showed me a picture of Marge Simpson wearing something similar.”

Kim admitted in the episode that she has “never really been the visionary” when it comes to style, but since their split it seems that the mother-of-three has found her own footing on the fashion front.

If her recent 2022 Met Gala red carpet outfit is any indication – the vintage gown worn by Marilyn Monroe to President John F. Kennedy’s birthday celebration in 1962 – Kim will be just fine in the style stakes, Kanye-approved or not.
