The Met Gala red carpet was filled with all the high-octane drama and glamour that you would expect from this year’s theme for the Costume Institute, In America: An Anthology of Fashion, from intricate corsetry to wide-hipped bustles.

But with all the glitz and the glam it's hard to catch everything that goes down on the most-watched red carpet event in the fashion calendar.

Often the devil is in the detail when it comes to the Met Gala’s most talked about moments. So here are the moments you may have missed from Monday’s Met Gala red carpet.

Blake Lively wore two looks in one

Co-chair Blake Lively matched the Met Gala carpet for the fourth time in her custom Versace gown, which is a feat in itself, but it was her transformation halfway up the stairs that really impressed fans, including husband and fellow co-chair Ryan Reynolds.

The actress’ designer gown originally featured a voluminous copper bow atop a train and was accessorised with copper opera gloves, but a buzz fluttering around Lively as she was on the stairs revealed that the large bow could be undone to reveal a longer, light turquoise blue train, which she told onlookers represented the effect that the weather has on the Statue of Liberty.

There was an engagement on the red carpet

Yes, really. As if the First Monday in May couldn’t get anymore interesting, former assembly candidate Bobby Digi Olisa asked New York City Commissioner of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Laurie Cumbo, to marry him on the stairs of the Met.

“You wait for this moment your whole life almost and for it to be right here, it was everything that I thought it would be,” Cumbo told AP News, whilst the Met Museum called it “an amazing moment on an amazing night!”

Kim Kardashian won the night’s theme in Marilyn Monroe’s *actual* dress

After a year’s hiatus and a pared back affair for the 2021 event, stars went all out for the 2022 Met Gala red carpet, and none more so than Kim Kardashian.

Never one to shy away from a red carpet moment, the reality TV star stepped onto the Met Gala red carpet (with boyfriend Pete Davidson in tow) in Marilyn Monroe’s actual dress that the actress wore to sing John F. Kennedy ‘Happy Birthday’ in 1962.

The dress was reportedly borrowed from Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum, and only for the red carpet, so great care was taken walking up the Met Gala steps, before the middle Kardashian sister changed into a replica for the rest of the night.

Cara Delevingne had a topless moment

Red-carpet regular Cara Delevingne stepped it up a notch in the theme of ‘gilded glamour’ by simply covering her top half in gold.

The model and actor, 29, removed her custom-made Christian Dior double-breasted jacket on the red carpet to free her bare chest – covered only with gold nipple stickers and accessorised with gold chain choker necklaces, body jewellery and a cane with a gold handle.

Bleached brows were a ‘thing’ on the red carpet

The Met Gala red carpet is the perfect platform for trying a new look; the themes and commitment of attendees when it comes to what to wear allows for some really different looks to the everyday looks of the stars in attendance.

However, the most unusual beauty look on the Met Gala red carpet actually comes courtesy of two famous faces who have tried and tested the bleached eyebrows look before.

Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams and model Kendall Jenner – who both walked the Met’s steps with striking blonde eyebrows – have tried the look before. Don’t fix what ain’t broke and all that.

Sydney Sweeney shed a layer of her dress

Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney made a big impression for her first time on the Met Gala red carpet. The actress, 24, took a leaf out of co-chair Blake Lively’s book, and, after ascending the stairs pulled off a dramatic reveal.

Sweeney suddenly removed the voluminous skirt of her peplum, corseted Tory Burch creation, to reveal a structured mini dress by the designer underneath.

Headwear was almost a prerequisite

Whilst headwear on a normal red carpet might be few and far between, on the Met Gala red carpet, it's almost expected. And this year’s Costume Institute fundraising event certainly didn’t disappoint.

Celebrity headwear ranged from high-end fine jewellery tiaras, to baseball caps, to fascinator-esque feathers.

Blake Lively’s Statue of Liberty-inspired tiara by Lorraine Schwartz featured seven spikes (just like Lady Liberty), and 25 gems around the base (to represent the 25 windows in the statue), whereas Kylie Jenner opted for a more casual look in a white flat cap that she wore backwards with her Off-White look.

There were two Jared Letos on the red carpet

Jared Leto isn’t a stranger to the Met Gala red carpet, having taken his own head as a date in 2019, but this time he one-upped even himself.

Arriving on the red carpet it was hard to tell who was who as a twinning pair ascended the Met’s steps.

Dressed in the same pale yellow floral Gucci suit, carrying the same bag and wearing their hair loose and long in the same way meant that it was almost impossible to differentiate between Leto and Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele.
