I've said it before. And now I'm saying it again: Like it or not, flared jeans are back. (Call them "bootcut" if you like. I have. But don't pretend we're not talking about variations on the same theme.) The latest evidence that our ankles need not be suffocated by restrictive swaths of cloth comes from Kendrick Lamar, who continued his run of "can't not talk about it" denim outfits at the Super Bowl tonight.

For his performance of "Not Like Us"—in which he leaned so hard on the "a-minor" line that it feels like something may have shifted in the actual fabric of the universe—the Compton rapper wore a motorsports-flavored leather jacket up top and anchored the look with light-wash jeans with a dramatic flare.

The response was as fast as it was enthusiastic. Folks on the internet are either extremely into these jeans—"kendrick rly a bad bitch in these jeans i need them can he drop a link"—or, at the very least, astounded by the physical impression they create. Which is exactly the point. You don't put yourself on one of the biggest stages in world wearing a pair of jeans like that by accident. You do it because you want to provoke a reaction.

Well, Kendrick, your efforts have paid off. The world watched, the world reacted, and the future of denim looks a little more certain right now than it did just a few minutes ago. Any smart investor—or inveterate gambler—should be betting big on flared jeans futures.
