People often refer to the analogy surrounding 'a glass being half full' and how this reflects someone's optimism. But does it not follow that the half-filled glass should serve a purpose? Is it to play a part in quenching thirst? Is it to assist with stopping papers from blowing off a table? A long list of questions applies.
