The Holiday fans stunned after discovering it wasn't meant to be a festive film
There's numerous hit Christmas films that we all love, from Home Alone to Love Actually. One title which has remained popular since its release in 2006 is The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Jack Black and several other high profile actors. The festive rom-com was written and directed by Nancy Meyers, who has opened up about her initial intentions for the movie.
Nancy has admitted that she didn't plan for The Holiday to be a Christmas film, and is still "shocked" at how festive the movie turned out to be. Speaking on the Hollywood Gold podcast, she said “I know it’s called The Holiday because they’re taking a holiday, but it could have been called that if it was in the summer. Everybody sees it as a Christmas movie, and when I watched it last night to prepare, I was a little shocked at how much Christmas was in it.”
She went on to reveal why The Holiday ended up being set in December, adding: “I just really wanted to tell the story about these people. I set it at Christmas because that can be lonely.”

Nancy admitted that rewatching the popular movie made her realise that the festive period is actually a "good time" for the characters in The Holiday to deal with their issues. She also revealed that she'd initially contemplated calling the film I Hate My Horrible Life, branding the title "insane".
Nancy's comments come after she reunited with actor Jude following his his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on 12 December. The director took to Instagram to share a clip of her meeting with Jude, sending fans of the 2006 festive film wild in the comments.
"Look who I'm having lunch with today. Jude Law! Congratulations on your so well-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. That's amazing," Nancy said in the video. The pair proceeded to share their excitement at having reunited for the first time in nearly 20 years.
Nancy added: "I don't think I've seen you since we wrapped The Holiday. Speaking of which, I've seen you've interviewed a lot, and they keep asking you if there's going to be a sequel. What do you think?" Jude then made reference his Mr. Napkin Head character from The Holiday as he reenacted the scene while other guests laughed.
Nancy's mention of a sequel had fans flocking to comment on the post, with one writing: "This is not the time of year to be messing around with our hearts, Nancy!" And another added: "For the love of god, please give us a sequel we are dying without a new Nancy Meyers movie!!!"
The Holiday is available to stream on Netflix.
