Gavin and Stacey star reveals ‘fantastic sex’ between characters ahead of Christmas special
James Corden has teased what could be to come in the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, ahead of its release on 25 December. The hit BBC sitcom, created by James and Ruth Jones, is returning to TV screens with one final episode on Christmas Day, marking the end of show, which first aired 17 years ago.
James, 46, and Ruth, 58, have kept details of the upcoming festival under wraps, with only a short trailer having been released so far. However, the pair, who portray Nessa and Smithy in the sitcom, have opened up about creating the last ever episode, including whether it really is the end and their aims for Nessa and Smithy's romance.
The Gavin and Stacey creators appeared on the Table Manners podcast, hosted by Jessie and Lennie Ware to talk all about the Christmas finale. James revealed he and Ruth had aimed for Smithy and Nessa's romance to be "messy" and they really enjoy the pair's "confidence" in regard to sex positivity.

"On TV or films, you very rarely see people that look like Ruth and I fall in love. You just don't. I'd be dropping off a TV to Hugh Grant in Brigit Jones and Ruth's like working on a newsstand when someone buys a newspaper. What I like about the show is that it's so messy and complicated and they just clearly have fantastic sex. I really enjoy that confidence," James said.
Meanwhile, Ruth added: "The first time they had sex was in the very first episode and I think because we didn't quite know what the show was we were probably being quite sitcom about it."
Elsewhere, James and Ruth teased what's to come, revealing the finale picks up exactly five years after the last episode left off. Gavin and Stacey last aired in December 2019 with a one-off festive special.
James teased: "The show picks up five years after we left off. It's one of the best pieces of acting what Ruth did with that character. Nessa has had this unbelievable checkered life and you find out more about that in this special — some really fun bits that we wrote. She's always had this stoic, hardened exterior and then when we wrote it I remember thinking 'this is going to be powerful.' When she says 'With all my heart' ... it makes me tingle now."
However, he did confirm that the finale really is the end of Gavin and Stacey for good. James said: "It can't carry on. When you'll see it, you'll know."
