More than 12 million Brits tuned in on Christmas Day to watch the finale of the beloved sitcom Gavin & Stacey. While this was certainly a fitting send off for the cherished characters, it will not actually be their last TV appearance.

The BBC is set to air a special one-off documentary on New Year’s Day, titled A Fond Farewell. As reported by Radio Times, the programme will not only detail the making of the last episode but the series as a whole.

Cast members will reflect on the entire story of the show from beginning to end. And creators and stars Ruth Jones and James Corden, who might be better known as their characters Nessa and Smithy, will reveal more about the inception of the iconic show and how it developed over the years.

Beginning life as a small and little-known comedy about one family from Wales and another from Essex on BBC Three in 2007 the show quickly became a favourite among viewers, eventually migrating to BBC One in later series. Certain characters and catchphrases quickly became fan favourites, establishing the show’s long-lasting legacy.

While the three-part series ended in 2010, the cast reprised their roles for a hotly-anticipated Christmas special in 2019 that ended on a cliff-hanger. The latest episode, which aired on Christmas Day this year, finally gave audiences the answers they wanted, wrapping up the storyline for good.

In this new documentary the cast as well as a host of celebrity guests will look back on Gavin & Stacey’s impact on British TV, picking out some of their favourite lines and moments. This week’s finale episode on Christmas Day drew in around 12.3 million TV viewers - the largest Christmas Day audience in more than a decade, according to the BBC.

It beat view numbers for the new Wallace and Gromit film, which was watched by more than nine million viewers and the King’s Christmas message, which was seen by nearly seven million people.

Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell will air on January 1 at 7pm on BBC One. It will also be available to stream on BBC iPlayer, where the 2024 Christmas special along with all other past episodes can also be viewed.
