Up until now, many of the show’s cast members including creator Ruth, who plays Nessa in the show, shut down any speculation of a new episode, making the latest announcement all the more exciting for fans who have long campaigned for a return to Barry to see where the characters are now.

Taking to social media fans were quick to share their delight at the news, even if it was bittersweet to know that it would be the final episode. However one running theme among many viewers was how nostalgic the Christmas return was proving to be.

A third fan also appeared to have the same opinion as they added: “Dr Who, Wallace & Gromit, AND Gavin & Stacey on the Christmas telly???!!!! Have I gone back in time?”

Before a fourth viewer echoed: “Me & my sister often talk about how the last time life felt “normal” was watching Gavin & Stacey on Christmas 2019. So is this the control alt delete to reset everything?”
