It's finally been confirmed that Gavin and Stacey will be making a return to screens as James Corden shared a snap with Ruth Jones as they held up a script for the new series.

He wrote: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

Fans quickly rushed to the comments section to express their excitement over the news. One wrote: "This has made my whole year!," while another said: "Cannot wait for this."

A third asked the all-important question: "Will we find out what happened on the fishing trip?".

The BBC said: “We’ll have: A chicken bhuna, lamb bhuna, prawn bhuna, mushroom rice, bag of chips, keema naan, nine poppadoms and the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey!!!

“Coming this Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer.”

Rumours started swirling earlier this year that the comedy series - which saw 20 episodes air over three series from 2007 to 2010, as well as a Christmas special in 2019 - would be returning for another Christmas episode. But, until now, many of the show's stars including Ruth shut down any speculation of a new episode.

Speaking on RTE Radio, the iconic Nessa actress said: "Apparently there's a bidding war between the BBC and Netflix. Where does this stuff come from?"

Reflecting on a meeting she had with fellow creator James she explained: "We went for lunch in London a few months ago and we got papped. And then the next thing is 'Oh my God they must be writing more Gavin & Stacey,' which is lovely. It's lovely that people love it and they're so desperate for it. Imagine if it was the opposite and they were like 'Oh God, they're not bringing that back.

"It's sadly a rumour. I don't know what to say. All I can say is - if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it. You know, we would."

While actress Alison Steadman - who played Pam on the show - told The Mirror: "If we did another series or episode, I would absolutely love it. But at the moment, as far as I know, it's not going to happen. None of us have been sent scripts, none of us, so until there's something definite and it's announced, then I'm not going to go along with anything, it might not happen. It's all up in the air."
