Buying a property at auction, especially without viewing it first, is always a risk. One Welsh house on Homes Under the Hammer had to be fumigated for a week after Martin Roberts discovered a horrific smell. While viewing the two-bed house in Maerdy, Martin sternly warned "don't underestimate" this problem.

Standing downstairs, Martin said: "What you can't smell is what I can and that is just as well because it would put you off your chocolate biscuits and your coffee... it stinks of dog! Now, don't underestimate the amount of effort it is going to take to get rid of that, especially if the dog has been allowed to just roam around and do whatever dogs do inside.

He added: "To get rid of that smell is a massive job, don't underestimate it." For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter

The property was bought for £57,500 by Tim from Berkshire who has appeared on Homes Under the Hammer before when he also renovated a property in south Wales. Tim planned to spend four to five months renovating the house, with a budget of £12,000 and planned to rent it out.

Talking about getting rid of the smell, Tim revealed that the house had to be fumigated for a week. He said: "It was a real challenge to get the property up to the standard mainly because we literally had to completely gut everything that was in here and then once all that was taken away the house went under fumigation for a week... before the renovation could start."

In the end Tim decided to sell the house, instead of renting and after keeping to budget, so a total spend of £69,500 the house was valuated between £90,000 to £95,000. This gave Tim a profit of £25,000 which he said was "a little low" as he aims to sell it for more.
