Emmerdale star 'to make TV return on rival BBC show' after sudden soap exit

Since departing from Emmerdale, Matthew Wolfenden has reportedly snagged himself a fresh TV gig.

The soap star is best known for playing David Metcalfe on Emmerdale, joining the show back in 2006. Last year, he shocked fans when it was announced he'd be taking his leave from the Dales after an impressive 17-year run.

Just earlier this month on This Morning, Matthew assured viewers about his surprising decision: "It feels like the right time. The door's left open. They're not killing me off, I've been promised. I'm allowed to tell you that. So who knows, I might be back, we will see."

Since bidding farewell to his ITV family, Matthew has dipped his toes into the podcast arena, co-hosting Celebrity Side Hustles with ex-co-star Roxy Shahidi. But now, the soap star is returning to TV with his first on-air gig since Emmerdale.

According to The Sun, Matthew is set to appear in the upcoming season of BBC's Celebrity Antiques Road Trip. An insider revealed to the publication: "Matthew has signed up for the show - he thinks it'll be a laugh and fun to be on TV as himself, not his soap character."

OK! has reached out to Matthew's representatives for comment. The fun telly programme on BBC Two challenges celebs to turn a profit trading second-hand treasures. It has previously welcomed the likes of Gemma Collins and Love Island's Davide and Ekin-Su to its roster.

In 2018, Matthew said 'I do' to Charley Webb, his on-screen co-star who portrayed Debbie Dingle. The couple have three adorable boys together, but split last year after five years together.

Matthew opened up on social media about the "nasty" messages he had received from trolls after breaking news of his split. Addressing his followers in January, Matthew wrote: "Just to set the record straight once and for all...

"...and hopefully this will be the end of it, and the end of me getting horrible messages on socials and people saying nasty stuff to me on the street...1. It was NOT my decision to end my marriage. 2. I met Heather (who I was pictured with in London) way after my marriage ended. Hope this clears stuff up for all the trolls out there."

The Emmerdale actor went onto date personal trainer Heather Scott-Martin, being pictured on a cosy night out in London.

He added: "Oh, and... 3. (and most importantly) Charley and I are still good friends. Our kids are our life and always will be."
