An Astrologer-Approved Hack for Decoding Your Relationship

In ELLE’s new column, Ask the AstroTwins, our resident astrologers take on your burning questions about the cosmos. In honor of Valentine’s Day, they’re tackling one of the most-asked, and most seasonally appropriate: What’s a quick way to know if two zodiac signs are compatible?
Ah, the old compatibility question. That’s definitely in the top three that astrologers hear and, honestly, personally obsess about in our own lives. (What, you thought we got into this because we like the way the stars twinkle in the sky?)
If you’re into astrology, you’ve probably spent a lot of time comparing your sign with your prospective love’s. I’m a Sagittarius with Virgo moon; they’re an Aquarius with Capricorn moon. While that’s great for understanding each other’s individual needs—and yes, your chemistry, too—there’s an even more effective way of figuring this out. How? Do your relationship’s chart.
Yes, that’s right. Your relationship actually has a “birth chart” of its own. This is derived by finding the midpoint between your sign and your partner’s. For example, Taylor Swift is a Sagittarius sun. Travis Kelce is a Libra sun. The sign right in between theirs is Scorpio, which explains the undeniably hot intrigue of Swelce.
While the technical term for this sort of relationship chart is “composite midpoint,” we’ve dubbed it the Supercouple Chart. Every single one of us has Supercouple potential. It’s activated when we come together around a common goal. Business partners can be Supercouples. Family members can be Supercouples (as twins, we know this well). Friends and creative collaborators can, too. Being a Supercouple simply means blending your energies to bring forth the best when you’re together. And the relationship chart has the cosmic code for how to do it most effectively.
Also, FYI, relationships don’t simply have a Supercouple sun sign. Like full birth charts, they also have a Supercouple moon sign (the midpoint of your moons), Mercury sign, Venus sign, and so on.
But if you’re new to astro-ing, the sun sign is a fine place to start. This is the “personality” of your relationship, and it reveals the energy that gets created when the two of you join forces. If you want to go further and figure out your whole relationship chart, our book Supercouple breaks down every planet in full detail. We highly recommend looking at your composite Venus and Mars to align your romantic and sexual chemistry. Your Supercouple moon sign will help you find the best emotional energy together.
It’s simply fascinating, especially since the relationship’s chart can be quite different than the charts of the two individuals. And this is why relationships can invariably feel like work, because they ask us to stretch beyond our comfort zones.
Here’s hoping this technique can shed some light on your love life. To help you get started, find a quick guide to the sun signs of every Supercouple relationship, below. Calculate yours here.
