Find Out Your First Plant Personality, Based on Your Zodiac Sign
When you’ve finally seen enough people posting about their luscious greenery and are ready to bring a little plant life into your own space, there’s a lot to consider. First, it’s exciting, because it’s time for your first houseplant! On the flip side, it can be daunting when there are so many different types of plants to choose from. Give your racing thoughts a break and take a cue from your zodiac sign to figure out what your first plant should be.
I’ve been practicing astrology for close to a decade — and have been caring for houseplants for just as long — so it seems only natural that I help you turn to the stars for a little jump start on your plant journey. Your lifestyle and personality will have a big impact on which plants will grow best for you, and you can glean some potential plant matches when you look at the traits your sign is known for.
So, before you head to the store or click “add to cart,” look for your astrological sign below for some keen insights into your unique first plant personality.
Aries (March 21 – April 19): Low-Maintenance Grower
Aries, I know you love a challenge, but you also have a lot on your plate. While you’re out there conquering the world — or just your work day — some of life’s smaller details can get swept to the wayside. (Oops!) So, you may need something more foolproof. For this, the ZZ plant is perfect: It looks like a symbol of your new green thumb, and it’s notoriously hard to kill.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Lush Leaf Stan
As a Bull, you enjoy a luxurious living space, and plants are the best partners for making a room feel alive. Taureans, you love to see the fruits of your labor. What better fruit than a jungle made from propagated stems? Pothos is a perfect first entry to make that indoor garden a reality. You only need one to get started, and before you know it, you’ll have leaves everywhere you look.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20): Curious Cultivator
Geminis love to get the yap started with a conversation piece that insists on catching eyes. Spice up the small talk with a rubber plant, an impressive houseplant that has a quirky history — it was used, for a short time, as a source of rubber. While it’s no longer used in commercial rubber production, you can share its legacy to stir up some discussions. Plus, rubber plants stand quite tall, so you won’t have to prod anyone to notice it.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Pet-Safe Planter
When you’re taking care of more than one kind of nature’s miracles (i.e., pets and plants), it’s important to make sure they can cohabitate! For anyone with pets — let’s be honest, that’s many of you Cancers — having pet-safe houseplants is a must. Bring home a money tree, which is nontoxic to dogs and cats, to spruce things up while keeping your furry ones safe.
Leo (July 23 – August 22): Bold Beginner
Leos dress to impress, so naturally you plant to impress, as well. When you want the flashiest results coupled with forgiving growth conditions, the selection process can feel especially overwhelming. Don’t fret; beauties like the fiddle leaf fig are here to save the day and will elicit that good kind of praise. Make sure to give it a quick shake once in a while to keep it healthy — think of it as the way fiddle leaf figs take their praise.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22): Greenery Practicalist
Beauty paired with practicality is a match made in heaven for Virgo. The efficiency of something that’s aesthetically pleasing and useful sparks the most joy. When you want a plant friend that can do both, look to little beauties like aloe vera for that two-for-one combo. It’s the perfect addition to your first-aid kit and your home design.
Libra (September 23 – October 22): Popular Propagator
Giving gifts is one of the many love languages at Libra’s disposal. Spreading love and wealth shows people just how much you care! This social quirk translates perfectly to the world of houseplants. Snip the stems of a beautiful philodendron to propagate new plants for your friends and loved ones. Plus, it’s a gift you don’t even have to wrap.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21): Blooming Enigma
Who doesn’t love a little mystery in their home decor? I know Scorpio certainly does. This seemingly secretive sign will love a beautiful spider plant. With a creepy-sounding name and long blooming leaves, it automatically comes with an air of intrigue. The spider plant will have your guests wondering, “Is that a houseplant, or an adorable green creature?”
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21): Busy Botanist
When you’re constantly on the move, taking care of a houseplant can be challenging. Hiring a plant sitter is an option, but for those Sagittarians who’d rather spend their money on a trip exploring new places, air plants are a great choice. They require the bare minimum: some water, a bit of light, and a mist every now and then.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19): Foliage Photographer
Plants are good for your home and your mind, but we know why you’re really looking to add some greenery to your space: the photo ops! As a Capricorn, you gleefully show off what you love, especially something you’ve grown from the ground up. For a beautiful bit of foliage to get you started, look to the monstera — you’ll probably snap a pic as soon as you bring this large-leafed plant home!
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18): Standout Seeder
It can be hard to stand out and feel unique when it seems like you see the same plants over and over. Aquarius, you need a plant as special as you are, but finding the right fit is hard. For a remarkable-looking plant, few houseplants look as unique and vibrant as the string of pearls. This succulent grows differently based on its habitat, so you could switch it up from a hanging basket to a pot on your table when it begins to feel “mundane.”
Pisces (February 19 – March 20): Water-Loving Horticulturist
Even though every person — and plant — needs water to survive, it’s hard to argue that anyone loves water more than a Pisces. You might think any plant would be a match, since, of course, they all need water — but the peace lily seems like a natural choice, as it can survive in water alone. Now, it does grow best in soil, but you can keep it in water to start, at least as you get to know it.
