Anne Frank and other questionable Halloween costumes
The most well-known victim of the Holocaust, Anne Frank, has been turned into a Halloween costume this year. Several retailers are selling a child’s costume which features a blue dress, beret and brown crossbody bag.
The backlash has been almost instant with people taking to Twitter to ask how a costume like this is acceptable in 2017. One retailer argued that it’s preserving the memory of Anne Frank with a Twitter user replying: “There are ways to commemorate Anne Frank. This is not one. We should not trivialise her memory as a costume.”
But this isn’t the first controversial costume to hit shelves this Halloween. Several people have been sexed up for the spooky season, including First Lady Melania Trump and 12-year-old ‘Stranger Things’ character, Eleven.
Then there’s the (unfortunately) usual cultural appropriation nightmares as well as some even more shocking border patrol looks.
Whatever you do this Halloween, we advise you don’t buy one of these looks.
