A wedding proposal often comes as a complete surprise, so much so that a bride-to-be can be caught off guard without their nails done.

And for many women the thought of showing off your shiny new sparkler with chipped nail varnish just isn’t the one.

That’s exactly what happened to one woman when her boyfriend popped the question before she’d had a chance to get a manicure.

Thankfully though, the woman’s cousin and best friend stepped up to offer her own perfectly preened hand for the big social media ring reveal.

Taking to Twitter, the woman’s personal hand-model uploaded two photos, which revealed not only the super sweet proposal but also the behind-the-scenes reality of the engagement ring shot.

“My cousin’s boyfriend proposed to her but she didn’t have her nails done,” she wrote alongside the accompanying tweet.

In the first shot, the happy couple kiss for their engagement ring shot, but the second shows her cousin crouching awkwardly out of sight, with her impeccably manicured hand, wearing the ring.

Unsurprisingly the tweet quickly went viral on social media, clocking up over 223K retweets 917K likes.

Many users applauded the bride-to-be’s cousin for stepping into the breach hailing the act as an example of true friendship.

Others took to Twitter to give their own partners the heads up that they shouldn’t propose unless they know their other half’s nails are on point.

While we’re on the subject of engagements, earlier this year, the Internet fell in love with the sweet grandpa who’s proposal recording fail earned him a legion of fans.

Having been charged with filming the special moment, grandfather John Hart, missed it entirely because the mobile phone was recording in selfie mode. Doh!

And back in September the Emmy’s made history by featuring a live on-stage proposal, the first in the ceremony’s 70 year history.

But while many swooned at director, Glenn Weiss’ very public declaration of love, a spotlight hogging proposal is not the dream for everyone.
