A grandpa is currently winning the Internet thanks to his proposal recording fail.

Note to self: if you’re going to ask someone to film your proposal, make sure they know how you want it recorded and more importantly that they plan on actually getting you in it.

Unfortunately John Hart, the man charged with filming the special event, didn’t quite get the proposal filming memo, and instead missed the beautiful moment because the mobile phone was recording in selfie mode.

The 71-year-old grandpa was on a family trip on top of the scenic Sandia Peak Tramway in Albuquerque, New Mexico when he met the soon-to-be engaged couple.

Though the filming task was initially given to a younger family member, because he had his hands full, the important job eventually fell to John Hart.

But as the stranger proposed to his girlfriend of eight years, it wasn’t the bride’s reaction that was captured but that of the grandfather himself who had unwittingly filmed himself instead of the proposal proceedings.

Despite having no actual footage of the special moment, the video clip does include Hart’s sweet reaction.

“Oh, that’s so cool,” he says in the video after letting out a touching “Aww.”

The video also captures the sound of the watching crowd cheering and congratulating the couple.

Eventually Hart’s family spotted the error and pointed out that the grandfather had been filming himself the entire time.

“You turkey!” he shouted when he realised.

Speaking about the mobile phone recording fail Hart told ‘Good Morning America’:

“It was quite a mistake but I guess it put a smile on a lot of people’s faces. So that’s a good thing.”

And though the newly engaged woman’s reaction wasn’t captured, Hart reveals that she was really, really happy.

“When he got down on his knees and opened up that ring box, the smile on her was so big and that’s what it was all about,” he said.

Though the grandpa is unlikely to be charged with the recording of any other big events, all is not lost as another passerby did manage to capture the important moment on video.

Now Mr Hart is hoping to track the other unofficial videographer down so the two clips can be edited together into one super proposal video.
