Traitors winner Jake wants to 'inspire' others with cerebral palsy
The Traitors winner Jake Brown has explained that he is happy he inspired others with cerebral palsy by appearing on the wildly popular BBC show, and that he hopes to break down the “stigma” surrounding disability.
The 28-year-old project manager won The Traitors’ third season alongside former soldier Leanne Quigley on Friday's hotly-anticipated final, splitting a prize of £94,600.
Jake spoke about having cerebral palsy on the show, first opening up to fellow contestant Alexander about the condition. Since leaving, he has explained that it “fills my heart” to see the impact that he has had on others with cerebral palsy.
“I had such lovely comments and posts about me, and it’s people like saying things like, I’ve inspired them,” Jake said in an interview with the PA news agency.
“Some people have cerebral palsy themselves, or [their] children have cerebral palsy, and it’s like, ‘Oh, my four-year-old son’s got cerebral palsy, and I’m worried about his future, but seeing you on TV, being so open and so confident with it, kind of gives me hope that my kids are going to be fine.’”
Jake added that as cerebral palsy, which can affect movement and coordination, is “such a hidden disability” there is not a huge amount of representation for people with the condition, or disabled people in general, on TV.
“So it’s nice to actually spread awareness and and show people that it’s not a negative,” he explained.
The Traitors contestant took to Instagram to celebrate his win on Friday, claiming taking part in the show was a “surreal and amazing experience”.
Shouting out his season three cast mates, he wrote: “I feel so lucky to have met all you wonderful people. I went into the castle just to play a murder mystery game, I wasn’t expecting to come out with a second family and so many life lessons.”
He added that none of the show would be possible without its host, “queen” Claudia Winkleman.
The Traitors season three is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
