This is how unhealthy dessert from your favourite high street restaurant is
Nowadays we’re all pretty aware that our favourite puddings, more often than not, contain a great deal of sugar.
It’s a rubbish fact that we all have to accept as we dream of our next Starbucks Christmas carrot cake whilst trying not to go overboard.
But you might not be aware just how much these desserts vary when it comes to their healthiness – because a brownie is a brownie, end of story, right?
Not at all, actually, because according to a study by Treated.com, even one brownie portion from two different favourite high street restaurants can vary by an entire 50g of sugar – while one from Domino’s has 20.3g in it, the same dish from Wimpy has a whopping 70.7g.
Researchers and GP Dr Wayne Osborne teamed together to figure out which desserts from 24 different chains have the highest calorie, sugar and saturated fat content, putting their findings onto three tables.
With regards to sugar, a chocolate fudge cake from Harvester contained the most with 128.3g of sugar – it also topped the calorie list too, containing 1217.
But when it came to saturated fat, a chocolate and Oreo mess from Toby Carvery was the worst with 53g in each serving.
Interestingly, sit-down restaurants (as opposed to fast food outlets) were the worst offenders, though this may be due to larger portion sizes – a chocolate and blood orange cheesecake from Zizzi came second on saturated fat levels at 32g, while a rocky road from Table Table came third on the sugar rankings at 93.1g.
Gourmet Burger Kitchen was a rare exception with its Yeo Valley ice cream pots at the bottom of each.
So that proves it; not all desserts are made equal. So it’s always important to think before you order.
