The Street Style at Milan Design Week May Be Giving MFW a Run for Its Money

Salone del Mobile may be giving Milan Fashion Week a run for its money.

From Louis Vuitton to Loewe, Hermès to Loro Piana, fashion houses made up a noticeable portion of the presentations in Milan as well as among the nearly 2,000 exhibitors at the 62nd edition of Salone del Mobile. Not to be outdone, visitors dressed to impress with looks rivaling the objects on display. Where the stylish set goes, WWD follows to document what They Are Wearing.

Here are the top four street-style trends from Milan Design Week 2024.

Bold Prints

There’s a lot of crossover between dressing a room and dressing oneself, but where it seems like interior designers have the upper hand is with styling prints. From a clown stripe suit to an argyle granddad sweater and even a smock dress with a leopard motif, these attendees did so with ease, bringing all of the fun of mismatched pillows to the street.

Bold Color

Hand-in-hand with prints, the interiors crew knows their way around color, a skill they put on display by painting the town red (as well as every other color under the sun). Colorblocking was especially prominent with ultra-luxe outerwear styled in a very unaffected, Italianate way: with low-heeled shoes and jeans. The latter also being a go-to for the interior crowd.

Inventive Suiting

While Salone has become somewhat “scene-y” in recent years, it’s a trade show after all, and beneath the glamour, serious business must be done. For those attending to work, not play, inventive suiting fit the bill, ranging from the more sartorial with traditional heritage fabrics to the more avant-garde, like this monochromatic black skirt suit with the sharpest of shoulders.

Utility Accents

Hunting for the best of the best in interiors and homeware is no cakewalk, so it’s easy to see why utilitarian influences would be popular, mostly seen in the oversize patch pockets and sturdy cotton fabrics worn in tone-on-tone neutrals. They may have been on the low-key side, but these workwear looks still had impact thanks to their play with proportion.
