This is how to stop ice from melting without a freezer

There's nothing worse than organising a summer barbecue or cocktail party, ordering all the necessary nibbles and cocktail ingredients, before realising you simply don't have enough space for your one most vital ingredient: Ice.

Particularly during what's predicted to be a scorcher of a summer, ice is the one necessary component for providing chilled drinks at the optimal temperature, but also the thing that takes up the most freezer space.

Cue awkward shoving year-old bags of peas and uneaten frozen bread slices to make room for everything. Resulting in exhaustion and excessive temperatures – rendering the need for ice even more vital.

Well according to Sciencing.com, all you need is some aluminium foil to keep your ice from melting for over four hours. Simply procure a plastic container, cover it fully with aluminium foil (shiny side facing outwards) and then insulate the inside of the box with foam to keep the temperature from seeping out of the container.

Sciencing.com explains that, 'the thick material will insulate the box, preventing the coldness of the ice from seeping out. This will keep the inside of the box at the same temperature as the ice for a longer period of time,' and that 'the reflective nature of the aluminium foil will prevent heat and light from penetrating the box, keeping the ice safe'.

Obviously it goes without saying, that you should also keep the box out of direct sunlight, to prevent any unnecessary heat exposure. If you don't have any plastic containers handy and are in dire need of non-melting ice, try keeping the ready-made ice in the bag and wrapping it thoroughly with aluminium foil, before sticking it in the fridge. This should have a similar non-melting result, but may not be as effective as the previous method.

N.B. This also works if you don't have a freezer (gasp), but still would like the opportunity to enjoy ice cold beverages like the rest of us. Or perhaps you've planned a long, lazy day in the park and a regular cool bag just won't cut it.

So go forth, armed with this clever hack and enjoy endless ice cold beverages all summer long!
