See Kate Middleton at Commonwealth Day Services Through the Years
Every year, the British royal family gathers at Westminster Abbey for Commonwealth Day. This year, the service is bound to look different, with both King Charles and Kate Middleton stepping back from public duties due to their health. Kensington Palace has said in a statement that she will not resume public duties until after Easter at the earliest.
"She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private," the Palace said in a statement in January. "Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness’ progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."
The Princess of Wales last appeared publicly on Christmas, though she was photographed by the paparazzi in Windsor last week, and an image of her for UK Mother's Day was released by the Palace yesterday—though the photo has since been recalled by numerous photo agencies over concern it was digitally altered. Though Kate will not be in attendance today, there is perhaps a greater global spotlight on the royal family due to their handling of her health news.
At this year's service, Prince William will be in attendance, joining Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and the Duke of Kent. As Kate misses Commonwealth Day this year, T&C decided to look back at her best fashion moments at the service over the years.
2023
For her first Commonwealth Day service as the Princess of Wales, Kate wore a matching navy set by Erdem, accessorizing with the Prince of Wales Feathers Brooch and Princess Diana's double-drop sapphire and diamond earrings.
2022
For the 2022 Commonwealth Day services, the first since the pandemic, the then-Duchess of Cambridge glowed in a sapphire blue Catherine Walker coat dress.
2020
In 2020, the Duchess opted for a red Catherine Walker coat for the service. This year's service was notable as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's final public engagement before they stepped back as senior working royals.
2019
Kate turned to Catherine Walker for this bright red coat dress for the 2019 Commonwealth Day service, a repeat from her 2014 trip to New Zealand.
2018
For this year's Commonwealth Day service, Kate was pregnant with Prince Louis, and opted for a Beulah London coat. It marked her return to the service after she and Prince William missed it the previous year.
2016
The Duchess of Cambridge wore a gray lace Erdem coat for the 2016 service.
2015
For her first-ever appearance at the Commonwealth Day service, Kate was pregnant with Princess Charlotte. She chose a blush pink Alexander McQueen coat—one that she had previously worn while pregnant with Prince George at Trooping the Colour in 2013. She accessorized with Kiki McDonough cushion drop earrings and a Jane Taylor Millinery hat, and carried a Prada clutch.
