Kate Middleton's Hat Is Fast Becoming An It-Item Chris Jackson

Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, has made an appearance wearing a piece of clothing that is slowly but surely bubbling up as an it-item within fashion circles. While it's commonplace for the 43-year-old royal to wear a headpiece to occasions such as the one she attended today at Westminster Abbey, this specific style choice will appease those on the style front line.

Putting aside her usual preference for a wide-brim chapeau, Her Royal Highness chose a neat pillbox hat in the same peppy red as her Catherine Walker coat. And it's exactly the sort of headpiece that is becoming the surprise choice of street style and catwalk favourites alike.

Of late, the simple-but-striking hat style has found fresh appeal amongst a new audience. Browse any of the street style galleries from the most recent run of shows from Copenhagen to Paris and you'll spot the style being worn in a plethora of ways. Sure, the Princess of Wales kept her take on the traditional side, but this isn't the only way to wear it. Some enjoy wearing it to bring a formality to a baggy jeans look, while others enjoy the additional drama one can bring to an already directional daywear look.

The return of the mid-century favourite is a direct trickle down from the catwalk, where we've seen them appear amongst the collections of The Row, Alaïa, and Valentino in recent years.

Of course, this phrasing of a pillbox hat as a veritable fashion piece is by no means its first time in the sun - that arguably came in the early 1960s when it was a favourite of America's then First Lady, Jacqueline Kennedy. Since, it's been beloved by countless women in the public eye, including the Princess of Wales' late mother-in-law, Diana. Hats off to the Princess for taking this trend for a spin.
