All Saints singer Melanie Blatt says an eight-year-long relationship caused her to become alienated from her friends.

She reveals this in conversation with Kate Thornton, on the presenter’s new podcast ‘White Wine Question Time’, produced in association with Yahoo UK.

Kate, together with Melanie and her All Saints bandmates Shaznay Lewis and Nicole Appleton, were discussing Melanie’s characteristic “honesty” which spurred on talk of a former “private relationship”.

“Mel is so brutally honest. You’re not afraid to not filter yourself, that’s a brilliant thing,” said Kate.

Melanie responds: “Do you know what, being a little bit serious, I spent maybe eight years of my life living a lie, being in a relationship and losing all my friends and not being myself for a long time.

“It took me years to get out of that mindset, and ever since I got through that, I said: ‘I’m never going to be anyone but myself’. Now I’m happy with who I am.”

“If that was the upside of the relationship, then that empowered you to be who you are,” adds Kate.

“You only have to look at Lil [Lilyella Zender, 20, Melanie’s daughter with former Jamiroquai bassist Stuart Zender] to see she is a product of a mother who believes in herself.”

Bad relationships can have a lasting effect, as one woman demonstrated recently after rejecting a job offer because the company’s CEO reminded her of an abusive ex-boyfriend.

Olivia Bland, 22, applied for a job at a company called Web Applications UK based in Oldham, and was granted an interview. According to her account on Twitter, she was later offered the role but chose to reject it following her experience at the “brutal” interview with the company CEO.
