Tonight marked SZA’s first time performing at the Super Bowl, and the singer-songwriter did not disappoint. She stepped onto the stage to join Kendrick Lamar for his Super Bowl halftime show, performing “Luther” and “All the Stars” in a red leather ensemble—and a beauty look that had us salivating for the details.
Luckily, ELLE.com spoke to celebrity makeup artist Deanna Paley, who was responsible for putting SZA’s makeup together for the big night. According to Paley, she and SZA worked together to design a look that felt true to the artist and her personal aesthetic. “We had conversations about how she wanted to feel on stage and what elements of her signature beauty look we wanted to highlight,” Paley tells ELLE.com. “We kept her signature elements—like the sultry cat eye, flawless sculpted skin, and a soft babydoll blush—to maintain her essence while ensuring she looked radiant under the stadium lights.”
SZA’s complexion looked perfect thanks to a host of Charlotte Tilbury products, including the Hollywood Flawless Filter in 6.5, Airbrush Flawless Foundation in 12.5 Neutral, Beautiful Skin Radiant Concealer in 9 and 11, and the Airbrush Flawless Finish in Tan. Paley also spritzed plenty of Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray while applying the products. “I like to use setting spray throughout the makeup process to lock in each layer as we go to make sure the makeup is performance-proof,” she says.
Paley also sculpted SZA’s cheekbones with the Hollywood Contour Wand in Tan and the Airbrush Bronzer in Tan and added a flush to the cheeks with the Beauty Light Wand in Pillow Talk Medium and Matte Beauty Blush Wand in Pillow Talk Dream Pop. To top it all off and add some extra radiance, the makeup artist brushed the Hollywood Glow Glide Highlighter in Gilded Glow onto the cheekbones.
For SZA’s sultry eye look, Paley drew on a cat eye with the Feline Flick Eyeliner in Panther, pumped up the lashes with Exagger-Eyes Volume Mascara, and helped the eyes pop with a bit of the Hypnotising Pop Shot in Diamond Eyes on the inner corners. And, of course, we were all wondering about SZA’s lip combo, which perfectly complemented the star’s auburn curls. “For this performance, we used Lip Cheat in Love Trap and Hot Lips Lipstick in Liv It Up,” Paley says. “Her hair color played a big role in determining the tones we used.”

We also consulted celebrity stylist Devante Turnbull, who worked on SZA’s show-stopping hair. Turnbull added extra length to her curls and used Redken’s Color Fusion 6RR to create a deep red shade that glowed on stage. “We kept the volume and texture she loves while adding a fresh, bold twist,” he says. Despite coloring the hair, he was able to keep it healthy and retain its shine via the K18Repair service, a two-step in-salon process. The treatment involves a four-minute session with the Molecular Repair Leave-in Hair Mask, which “helps preserve the curl pattern, even after bleach or color,” Turnbull explains. Turnbull also applied the Molecular Repair Hair Oil to tame frizz and protect the hair from heat before utilizing the GHD Curve Wand and GHD Thin Wand to architect her long, flowing curls.
