Some of life’s simplest creations are the finest, and sandwiches are one of them. Who knew that filling swashed between two pieces of bread could be so, so good?

But of course everyone has their preference: Do you prefer a simple cheese sarnie or a packed BLT? Are prawn mayo sandwiches a creation of the devil or pure genius? And don’t even just us started on pickled onion – it’s enough to divide a nation.

Well whatever your persuasion, a new survey has pinpointed the UK’s favourite sandwiches from the 1970s to present day.

The study, commissioned by Warburtons and conducted by SWNS, questioned 2,000 Brits.

The results found that the most popular sandwich in the 1970s was the humble ham salad, while the chicken salad was the lunchtime sarnie of choice in the 1980s. The iconic BLT stole the top spot for the 1990s, while (quite randomly) smoked salmon and cream cheese.

So which sandwich are the people of 2018 choosing to chow down on?
