A revelation that your phone is filtering your photos into secret categories – including one containing all ‘bra’ pictures – has got women on Twitter freaking out.
Smart image recognition technology was first introduced back in 2015 and uses an algorithm to automatically sort images into 4432 different category keywords.
But while ‘cats’, ‘sunglasses’, ‘pub’ all feature, so too does the category ‘brassiere’.
When using the search function in your ‘Photos’ app, typing in ‘brassiere’ brings up any pictures in your photos which have cleavage or boobs in them.
And Twitter users are not happy.
One of the first to spot the category was Twitter user @ellieeewbu who took to the social media site to express her surprise.
“ATTENTION ALL GIRLS ALL GIRLS!!! Go to your photos and type in the ‘Brassiere’ why are apple saving these and made it a folder!!?!!?” she wrote.
Since sharing, her tweet has received more than 11K retweets and over 19K likes with many women reacting with surprise about the Apple device recognising pictures of their boobs.
Some women have also taken to posting screenshots of their own results when typing brassiere into the search bar.
Interestingly, while women’s undergarments like ‘brassiere’ and ‘bra’ are listed as categories, male categories like ‘pants’ ‘boxers’ or ‘briefs’ don’t make an appearance.
But before you rush to delete all your cleavage pictures, the important thing to consider is the fact that the results appearing in your ‘brassiere’ search category only actually appear on your phone.
Unlike similar image recognition tools developed by Facebook and Google, Apple doesn’t actually look at your pictures or store the information about what’s in them.
So there’s probably no need for a photo library cull just yet.
We’ve reached out to Apple for comment and will update this article if we hear back.
