When it comes to iconic sitcom characters, it's fair to say that our "Doris" is up there with the best of them.

From playfully flirting with Gavin to refusing to make Nessa's famous salad to singing The Smiths at a family BBQ, Gwen's neighbour in Gavin & Stacey had some absolutely brilliant scenes.

But, even though the sitcom ended at Christmas following an impressive 17 years on our screens, there's still a few things people don't know about one of the most memorable stars of Ruth Jones and James Corden's brainchild.

Margaret John, who played the role of Doris, actually had a major role in another iconic show many years before taking to Barry Island. If you didn't realise, she actually starred in Crossroads back in the 1980s.

From 1978 to 1984, she played the part of "Marian Owen" in the iconic soap, and her character was very different. Marian would often lend a caring ear to friends and family, and usually offered calm and reason during times of crisis.

Though she had no major storylines of her own, Marian's character was often seen dipping in and out of the show. She normally took part in other characters' stories, and was a regular for the best part of six years.

But it wasn't until old clips of Crossroads appeared on YouTube that many people realised the actress starred in the show back in the day.

One person said: "Where's the salad? Where's the salad? THERE's the salad!" Another wrote: "I miss those days."

A third replied: "RIP Margaret John." Meanwhile, a fourth person did remember her in the role, writing: "I really enjoyed Margaret in this character. Also enjoyed her little jaunty walk."

After her time at Crossroads the actress, who died in 2011 at the age of 84, also went onto have roles in Doctor Who, The Mighty Boosh, Run Fatboy Run and notably played "Old Nan" in Game of Thrones.

Devastatingly, Margaret died in Swansea back in February 2011. Not long before her death, Swansea University awarded her an Honorary Fellowship to recognise her long career.

After Margaret passed away, the cast of Gavin & Stacey continued to pay tribute to her in special, more recent, episodes. Her character was often mentioned by the cast, and it reminded viewers just how loved "Doris" continues to be today.
