Move over Amandaland, Anna Maxwell Martin is joining a spin-off of her own!
Move over Amandaland, our favourite Motherland star Anna Maxwell Martin is joining a TV spin-off of her own - and we can't wait to see it. The BAFTA-winning actress, last seen as stress-out mum Julia in BBC One's Motherland, is set to lead Apple TV+'s upcoming series Star City, a spin-off from the streamer’s critically acclaimed space race drama For All Mankind.
If For All Mankind, the series that dramatises an alternate history depicting "what would have happened if the global space race had never ended" after the Soviet Union succeeds in the first crewed Moon landing ahead of the US. is anything to go by, the new spin-off is set to have us glued to our sofas and our TV screens. Want more details? Here's everything we know so far...
What is Star City about?
If you haven't watched For All Mankind, we'd highly recommend you give it a try. The gripping space drama, which has been renewed for a fifth season, plays with a fictional timeline where the Soviet Union beat America in the 1960s Space Race with the Soviets becoming the first nation to put a man on the moon. The show explores how history might have been different if the space between the two countries never ended.
Described as a "propulsive paranoid thriller", its spin-off Star City will takes us back to the moon landing (shown in All Mankind's first season) but this time showing the perspective of the Soviet Union and exploring the lives of the cosmonauts and engineers involved in the space race.
The synopsis reads: "But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space programme, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward."
The show comes from the same creators, Ronald D Moore, Matt Wolpert and Ben Nedivi, whose fascination with the Soviet space programme has only grown since they started working on For All Mankind.
They said: "The more we learned about this secret city in the forests outside Moscow where the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers worked and lived, the more we wanted to tell this story of the other side of the space race. We could not be more excited to continue building out the alternate history universe of ‘For All Mankind’ with our partners at Apple and Sony."
Who's starring in Star City?
With the show still in development little is know about the cast detail so far - although if the series follows the same pattern as For All Mankind we can expect a big ensemble cast.
According to Variety, Anna Maxwell Martin will star as the head of the KGB surveillance department at Star City called Lyudmilla.
Meanwhile Notting Hill star Rhys Ifans, will play the Chief Designer, also described as "the driving force of the Space programme."
