From Pamela Anderson-Inspired Updos to '90s Waves, Celeb Stylist Mia Santiago Shares Fall Bridal Hair Trends

Santiago — who has worked with famous clients including Brittany Snow, Hugh Jackman and Mariska Hargitay — also reveals her top wedding day hair tips

Summer wedding season may be in full swing, but celebrity stylist Mia Santiago is already getting inspired for fall.

Santiago — whose famous clients include Mariska Hargitay, Brittany Snow, Colin Farrell, Dove Cameron, Hugh Jackman and John Legend — tells PEOPLE that fall's biggest bridal hair trends will range from sexy, Pamela Anderson-inspired updos and intricate buns to '90s-style "glam waves."

To achieve these looks, Santiago has some expert tips. She says extensions can help elevate any style, including the updo.

"I like to use the Hidden Crown Flip Up Clip extensions for the tousled Pamela Anderson updo. It’s perfect to add length to create texture at the top of the head," she notes.

For brides opting for a long, textured ponytail, she recommends Hidden Crown Hair’s bungee ponytail to provide length and volume.

Her advice for creating sleek, textured buns is to spray a flat toothbrush or spoolie with hairspray and lightly seal down any flyaways for a flawless finish.

Braids remain another popular choice for weddings, and Santiago suggests one not-to-be-missed step before finishing with hairspray to keep the braids intact.

"Sometimes braids can be lopsided. Before securing your braids with hairspray, step back and look at the full finished look to check for balance," advises the hairstylist, who is currently opening her own luxury hair and scalp spa suite in Columbus, Ohio, and shares a space with celebrity hair colorist Nikki Ferrara in New York City.

For those brides going with waves on their big day, Santiago recommends: "For a modern fall flair, sleek the bang area down and tuck behind the ears — to keep this look super snatched — and secure behind the ears with a tiny elastic."

Santiago's other top bridal hair tips include using your wedding dress for inspiration when deciding on your hair look. "Find your dress first," she says.

Another important factor to consider is the weather. "If it’s 90 degrees and you’re getting married on the beach, opt for an updo or a chic ponytail. Reduce the frizz and your desire to keep touching your hair," she says.

Santiago tells PEOPLE the biggest mistake she sees brides make is trying to look like someone they're not and choosing styles that are not timeless.

"You want to elevate your natural beauty on the day of your wedding — not look like a completely different person," she explains. "I always suggest to brides that they enhance their glam but not overdo it. You will have these pictures forever. Be mindful of the styles you’re choosing.

She adds that it's important to do your research and book a trial before committing to a hairstylist or makeup artist. "Don’t sign a contract until after your trial," she urges. "I see many brides signing contracts before knowing if the stylist can achieve their dream hair goals."

Santiago also suggests asking around for recommendations. "Word of mouth. Your amazing hairstylist might not do wedding hair, but they will know someone awesome who does," she explains. "Then look them up on social media or Google and read the reviews and see their work."
