Most children go through a stage when they no longer want to hug their mum (cuddling up to your mother as she drops you off for school is *not* a good look), but most parents don’t respond in the same way as Marieke Voorsluijs.

The mum decided to knit herself another version of her teenage son, complete with a hat, trainers, watch and his very own iPod, so she could cuddle him instead.

The finished product is actually brilliant (and scarily realistic) thanks to the fact that Voorsluijs is a professional knitter with her own book, but the Internet is a little freaked out by it – and understandably so. After all, it’s not everyday that you see a women snuggling up to a knitted replica of her son.

But Voorsluijs is quick to stress that the project was a bit of fun - and her son was on board with the creation of his knitted doppelganger from the word go.

“I am a professional knitter who likes to knit weird things for my brand Club Geluk,” she tells Yahoo Style UK. “We knit realistic everyday stuff with lots of details and even wrote a book about it.

“We knit hams, TV’s, plants, etc. To set the bar a little higher regarding my knitting skills I thought of knitting my son. He liked it and we worked together on it. The reactions during the process were so diverse from creepy to beautiful that we decided to make some photos in real life to place the weirdness in context. It was a fun art family art project.”
