Rugby star Mike Tindall became one of the unexpected stars of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations with his sharp sense of humour shining through over the four-day weekend.

Tindall, the husband of to the Queen's granddaughter - and Princess Anne's daughter - Zara, appeared at ease with all members of the Royal Family, cracking jokes and gently teasing them.

While Prince Louis charmed the crowds with his cheeky expressions both on Buckingham Palace's balcony and during the pageant, it was Tindall who appeared to jest that he had his eye on the young royal's behaviour.

But it was on Instagram where he had the most fun. Tindall, 43, used his public account to gently poke fun at himself, his wife and her family throughout the festivities.

He wrote: "#platinumjubilee hats day 2. Fav so far! What colour do you think tomorrow will be?"

And while Zara, 41, and her cousins Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie seemed to win in the style stakes across the weekend, Tindal couldn't resist a joke at their expense on social media.

He posted a picture of wife Zara looking stunning in a pink block colour dress by Laura Green, next to her cousin Eugenie in an equally chic orange Emilia Wickstead frock, and compared them to Starburst sweets.

With Tindall's quick-witted sense of humour it is no wonder he is favourite among the royals.

Yorkshireman Tindall is a former rugby union star who played for Bath and Gloucester. He won 75 caps for England and was part of the 2003 World Cup winning squad.

He and equestrian Zara, the Queen's granddaughter, have been married since 2010 and are regulars at royal events.

Zara and Mike Tindall are not working royals as Princess Anne refused titles for both Zara and her older brother,Peter Phillips, when they were born.

It is believed Princess Anne thought her children would have more freedom if they did not have titles and they've both continued to forge their own careers: Zara as an equestrian and Peter Phillips has worked for F1 racing teams and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The Tindalls have three children - eight-year-old Mia, Lena, three and son Lucas who is one and appear to be following in Princess Anne's footsteps by wanting to give their offspring as 'normal' an upbringing as possible, despite their royal roots.

Their eldest daughter Mia appears to have inherited her parents' exuberant nature as she was spotted dancing away to ABBA with her cousin Savannah Phillips.

Eight-year-old Mia and her older cousin Savannah, 11, could be seen dancing, singing and waving their arms in glee during the performance at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant last night.

With the Tindalls around, it seems there will never be any shortage of fun at royal family gatherings.
