Although only eight months will have passed since Kim Kardashian covered her entire face and body on the 2021 Met Gala red carpet in September, the biggest night on the fashion calendar has returned to its usual slot for this year; the 2022 Met Gala will once again be held on the first Monday in May, per tradition.

After two years of COVID-19 chaos, the annual fun-raising gala for the The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute will return to its rightful, and traditional, date at the beginning of May in New York. Year after year, stars from across the globe descend on the Met's famous steps to cash in their sought-after, $35,000 tickets to fashion’s biggest night of the year.

As the Met Gala 2022 theme is announced, here’s everything you need to know about this year’s event.

When is the Met Gala 2022?

The 2022 Met Gala will take place on Monday, 2 May at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

This year’s event celebrates the second volume in a two-part exhibition by the Met’s Costume Institute. The first, In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, opened on 18 September, after the 2021 Met Gala on 13 September, 2021.

What is the 2022 Met Gala dress code?

The 2022 Met Gala event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art will celebrate the second volume of the Costume Institute's two-part exhibition on American fashion, entitled In America: An Anthology of Fashion, which by tradition also makes it the 2022 Met Gala red carpet dress code.

That might sound similar to last year’s In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, which celebrated the Costume Institute’s 75th anniversary and explored a modern vernacular of American fashion from the 1940s to today.

Both celebrate American fashion. However, 2022's In America: An Anthology of Fashion focuses on the earlier years of fashion in America, in particular the grandeur of the Gilded Age.

What can we expect from the Met Gala 2022 theme?

Think of this year’s exhibit as a prequel to September's exhibition, expanding on the defining pre-20th century moments of American fashion by diving deeper into the archives.

While the 2021 Met Gala statement red carpet outfits such as Jennifer Lopez’ Ralph Lauren cowboy couture, Kim Kardashian’s avant-garde Balenciaga bodysuit with $10,000 ponytail extension, and Billie Eilish’s Marilyn Monroe-inspired Oscar de la Renta gown, expect this year’s Met Gala red carpet to explore the foundations of American fashion.

According to Vogue, the exhibit – which opens on 7 May in the period rooms of the American Wind of the museum – will feature “roughly 100 captivating examples of men's and women's dress highlighting designers and dressmakers who worked in the U.S. from the 19th century to the mid-late 20th century.”

Expect the lavish and unbridled extravagance of a 19th century New York in the shape of corsets, large bustled derrieres and vivid jewel tones, accessorised with feathered and beaded embellishments and headpieces.

As was the case for In America: An Anthology of Fashion, this year’s exhibition will also see Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Museum of Modern Art’s Costume Institute, focus on inclusivity in fashion and continued to ask the question from the 2021 red carpet: “Who gets to be American?”

Who are the Met Gala 2022 hosts?

Arguably one of the Queens of the Met Gala red carpet, Blake Lively, will serve as co-chair for the annual fashion fete. She will be joined by husband and actor Ryan Reynolds alongside Oscar-winner Regina King and Broadway superstar Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The famous foursome join the event’s industry co-chairs and honorary hosts: fashion designer Tom Ford, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri and Vogue's Editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.

How can I watch the Met Gala 2022?

Last year was the first year that Vogue live-streamed the Met Gala red carpet, but it remains to be seen if that will be the case for this year’s event.

Who is attending the 2022 Met Gala?

The Met Gala guest list is notoriously exclusive, so expect only the biggest celebrities and fashion royalty to make their way up the famous steps at this year’s event.

As for who tends to be on the Met Gala guest list? A selection of the Kardashian-Jenner family tends to show, with their designer friends in tow, as well as a number of celebrities from film, television and music.

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky made their red carpet debut at the 2021 Met Gala, where they sparked rumours of a pregnancy, but it remains to be seen whether the singer and entrepreneur will take her baby bump to the Met Gala.

Euphoria star Zendaya has already had to “disappoint” her fans by announcing that she wouldn’t be attending the gala this year due to clashes in her work schedule.

How do you get invited to the Met Gala?

The Met Gala is one of the most exclusive events of the celebrity social calendar, and unlike other fundraising galas, the guest list is invitation-only.

Since 1995, the guest list has been carefully curated by American Vogue editor Anna Wintour and this year is no different.

Among those lucky enough to secure invitations are the Costume Institute’s benefactors who have donated (often a ton of money) to the museum.

Firstly, there are the individuals who have donated both time and money to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and then there are the fashion houses and companies who buy tables to the event, and can invite guests. Wintour still presides over the guest list and has final say on who is allowed in, so if she doesn’t like a brand’s guest, it's a no-go I’m afraid.

Elsewhere, invitations are typically based on a person’s status, according to The New York Times, so if you’re hella famous, or the latest model, designer or major talent in the world of fashion, film or music, you’re pretty much guaranteed the opportunity to buy a ticket.

How much is a Met Gala ticket?

According to The New York Times, tickets can go for $30,000 (£23,000), while tables cost between $75,000 and $250,000 (£211,000) depending on the size of the brand and its relationship with Vogue.

Whilst the tickets might seem an extortionate price to the average Joe, all of the money from ticket sales is donated to the Costume Institute, which is the only department of the Met Museum that has to fund itself. Just over £12 million was reportedly raised at the 2018 event.
