Meghan Markle opens up about the struggles of being a biracial actress
Meghan Markle has never been quiet when it comes to issues within Hollywood.
The 35-year-old actress (and girlfriend of Prince Harry) previously penned a letter detailing the racism she’s faced throughout her career and the “countless black jokes people have shared in front of me, not realising I am mixed.”
Now, she has spoken about the ‘whitewashing’ treatment given to her and other celebrities who have “ethnically ambiguous” appearances.
“To this day, my pet peeve is when my skin tone is changed and my freckles are airbrushed out of a photo shoot,” she told Allure.
The star, who was born to an African-American mother and Caucasian father, also shed light on the first time she realised she was different.
“I took an African-American studies class where we explored colourism; it was the first time I could put a name to feeling too light in the black community, too mixed in the white community,” she commented.
Meghan refuses to let airbrushing bring her down though, adding: “For all my freckle-faced friends out there, I will share with you something my dad told me when I was younger: ‘A face without freckles is a night without stars.'”
