Another Hollyoaks character has left the series, following a tragic death in the episode shown on Wednesday 8 May on E4. Viewers who watch the soap via Channel 4’s streaming service will already know it is Lizzie Chen-Williams, played by Lily Best, who was pronounced dead just hours after her dad Dave (Dominic Power) married Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring).

It comes at an especially sad time, as Lizzie had recently revealed she had given birth in secret 10 years ago, and had made the decision to seek out her child with the help of a health visitor. Following a misunderstanding in which her dad thought his bride to be Cindy was having second thoughts about marrying him and was talking to his daughter about it, Lizzie told Dave the truth and he supported his daughter in her decision.

The family happiness didn’t last for long, however. While Dave and Cindy celebrated their wedding at The Loft, Lizzie joined her friends on the dance floor and, after some hesitation, decided to take the drugs that fellow wedding guests Dilly (Emma Johnsey-Smith), Hunter (Theo Graham) and Prince (Malique Thompson-Dwyer) were passing around.

She then danced with her dad, but collapsed on the floor and lost consciousness in front of him. Zoe (Garcia Brown) attempted to resuscitate her, but neither she nor the paramedics who arrived could save Lizzie, and Dave soon realised that his daughter had died. And she may not be the only one who doesn’t survive the night, as Dilly, Prince and Hunter have all been affected by the same drugs.

Fans were quick to take to social media to share their shock and, in some cases, disappointment at Lizzie’s sad death. One wrote: “Actually liked Lizzie in Hollyoaks. Bit of a weak ending for the character, taking dodgy tablets and dying in Dave’s arms but I suppose they have a lot of cast to get rid of before September.” Another added: “I wasn’t too fussed with Lizzie but there was a hint of a good storyline with her and just kill her off such bad timing.”

Some viewers were surprised it was Lizzie and not another character who died in the episode. “OMG, OMG I wasn’t prepared, I tried so hard to be! Damn it not Lizzie! I’m literally crying right now. I loved Lizzie. She was an amazing person. I thought be Hunter,” said one, while another fan commented: “I had Lizzie’s exit spoiled for me 30 seconds before it happened on screen and I’m so baffled? She’s one of the best new cast members we’ve had in years #Hollyoaks.”
